Refresher Course - John Nicholls

John Nicholls' series of weekends for teachers, originally called The Carrington Way of Working, will not be available for 2010-2011. The program has run very successfully for the past 7 years and will resume in 2011-2012. If you would be interested in participating then, please contact John by email or phone.

In the meantime John will be offering some "one off" weekend refreshers for teachers both in New York and in some other places. Keep checking here and on our Calendar page

John Nicholls’ Teacher Refresher Course

John Nicholls offers a teacher refresher course based on his highly acclaimed weekend program: "The Carrington Way of Working".  In it he presents his synthesis of the fundamental elements of the Carrington approach to Alexander teaching in a way that can be assimilated and used by teachers trained outside of that tradition.

Historical Background

In the last years of his life, FM Alexander entrusted to Walter Carrington the running of his teacher training course. Walter (later together with his wife Dilys) went on to train around 300 teachers.  John Nicholls worked for eleven years as assistant to Walter and Dilys Carrington, teaching daily alongside them, and was a founder and initial coordinator of the separate first year program they introduced into their training in 1981.

The Course will address questions such as:

  • How do we give clear experiences of improved use combined with clear understanding of how such experiences have been brought about - ensuring that our students will have both the necessary experience and the understanding to consciously facilitate these changes themselves.
  • How do we communicate quickly and easily that at the heart of our work lies the primary co-ordination of postural support, breathing and movement.
  • How do we ensure that in using our hands and voice to encourage expansion in a student, we are not squeezing ourselves and thereby creating disharmony between the message and the messenger?

Structure

The program comprises six weekends over an eight month period, and six sessions of individual work.  Each weekend has a theme, forming a structured progression through the months.

The group explores each theme with a combination of theory and practice.   The practical work involves all participants putting hands on each other following a guided program designed to quickly build new teaching skills.
